Week 5 Update

Week 5 was a short one, as the team decided to take a little of a break for the 4th of July weekend.

After visiting the Rapid Prototyping Center last week, we were very excited to have our parts made that we’ve been working on to start putting our ideas into physical pieces.  We also continued to work on the interim report and hope to have it done and edited in the next couple days.  Along with the interim report, each sub-team wrote up their start-up launch procedures for flight day.  As we prepare to test our experimental designs, each team finished up on ordering any parts that may be needed too.

Sub-team Updates:

Charge/Voltage

  • Sent enclosure parts to the RPC to be made.
  • Received some parts that have many specific instructions and warning signs… This will be fun! Or scary?
  • Continued to work with the Basic Stamp.  Pretty sure we will be Basic Stamp geniuses - next week we are going to have a party to learn cool tricks and code.

Solar Tracking

  • Continued to find the perfect dome for the tracking device and ordered.
  • Also working on perfecting the Basic Stamp code for the servos to track the sun.
  • Designed and sent parts to the RPC.

Mercury/Ozone

  • Ozone will not be studied anymore unfortunately.  Finding a sensor was too expensive and were then sent around never to quite get the right answer.  We are still excited to focus mainly on the mercury.
  • Received gold traps in the mail.
  • Sent contraption to the RPC to be made.
  • Determined the turning points for the servo when testing each gold trap.
  • Got caught in the downpour on the way back from ACE Hardware.

I know that we are all anticipating and very excited for our launch day.  Thanks!
